Whiteley Center

I spent time at the Whiteley Center during the summers of 2018, 2019, and 2021 (we all know what happened in 2020). Each year I have been lucky enough to spend more time , culminating in a three week stay in July of 2021. What a glorious stretch to spend in the MacFarlane Studio! This year was particularly meaningful as my father had passed at the end of June and I arrived at Friday Harbor days after his funeral. I was given the luxury to mourn and sort through my thoughts - this was certainly a period to generate ideas rather than finish projects. I gravitated towards making boxes or talismans that held the memory of my father, of natural worlds lost or about to be lost, and of this place. I spent hours collecting on the beach or in the forest, and created objects from these collections, including an eight foot long humpback whale. I created prints from the abundant driftwood in the area which will become an artist book. When the artist book is finished it can be found on the Artist Book page of this website.
